About the purchase price of an R32 GT-R, probably the most researched JDM car right now. Checking in at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , they've got a few examples listed for sale and import later this year, all of them around the $20,000 mark. I'm not sure if this is just a placeholder-type price because the cars aren't available for actual sale, or if literally every example regardless of options or mileage or condition is going to be sold for a minimum of $20,000. Over at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , we have a few GT-Rs listed for about half of what Buy-R is charging, but these are being sold in Canada and I'm not sure what hoops you would need to jump through to import a 25y.o. JDM car from Canada to the US.
So, what should the going rate for a legal 25 year old GT-R be in the US? As much as a near-perfect E39 M5 or E46 M3?

I know - you guys are selling them for around $10k apparently. Throw in some poutine and that sounds like a good deal to me.

Stock ones are about $5k and you can get fully stripped and almost race prepped for $15k typically.

Good question. What would a "normal" (non-imported) car from 1989–1994 with 276hp and weighing 3,146 lbs go for?
That's FC-FD RX-7, Z32 300ZX, and MXIV' ish Supra territory. So comparing apples to apples, the pricing isn't bad if it's around $20K. Obviously good examples of the cars I just listed will blow past that mark, as will particularly nice R32 GT-Rs probably.

It would probably be a lot easier to import one from Canada than direct from Japan.
but most of the sites you will see in Canada the cars are actually still in Japan but the price they give you is the price landed in the port of Vancouver any additional shipping is extra. there used to be a bunch of guys keeping local canadian stock and all their cars had what we call O.O.P (out of province inspection) done so it was fully ready to go.
you may want to check canadian stock as R32 GTR's is selling for roughly $13000 CAD (11900.00 usd).
when they first started importing them 7-8 years ago you could not find one under $20K.

Yeah the Canada thing intrigues me, especially now that I'm only about an hour and a half flight or eight hour drive from Toronto... There are lots of '89 and old JDM cars (and even more coming up in the next few years) that I would love to bring across the border, but I suppose I need to do more research on what would be involved with importing a 25y.o. JDM car from Canada. Think of how awesome it would be to have a Pulsar GTi-R or Evo IV/V for your DD or winter beater?!

At 20k they are crazy, however this is how the market will probably change as now demand is shooting through the roof. I think fair price would be about 15k all said and done for a well maintained one sitting in your driveway.

I'll be honest, but I've never seen a Z32 going for $20k (or even a Z32 worth $20k), and the Supra and FD are probably worth it, but I'm more interested in the actual price of a vehicle in Japan, plus import fees/tariffs, prep and profit for an importer. Are they going to charge $20k because they can, or is that a legitimate imported price? Obviously if Canadians can get an R32 imported and sell it for profit around $10k why can't we do the same in the US?

X date - right. It has to be after the car's listed production date.

Yeah, the Z was the outlier in that group.
I was just answering the question In initially thought you asked, which is "what's it really worth" in the US market. That's if you don't take into account the import fees, etc.
But yeah, if they can sell them that inexpensively in Canadia, why not here? Although, in the grand tradition of government fees, our process is probably more difficult and pricey.

Agreed. Also I hadn't thought to compare the GT-R to the Supra (ridiculous prices) or FD because it's not like there's a source to get them regularly except from enthusiast owners that tack-on aftermarket parts and pricing.

Yeah, it's tough to compare it to a similarly spec'd domestic, or even a BMW that's pretty prevalent. Regardless, I can't wait to see them around here more. I got passed on 66 one day by an R32, was like seeing a freakin unicorn.

I was about to say the same. There's a GTR for 10k here if I recall

They're all GTS-Ts, which are way cheaper.

Pulsars rust to buggery so perhaps not the best choice.

There are nice ones about (albeit far less than those that have been run into the ground), but I just thought it might be worth pointing out that road salt would be a bit of a problem if using it as a winter beater.
That's worth saying in general to anyone thinking of importing from Japan really; under-seal!
